Pro-alcohol environment having 'devastating effects'

The pro-alcohol environment that permeates today's society is having devastating effects.

This is according to Dr Evelyn Gillan, chief executive of Alcohol Focus Scotland.

Dr Gillan explained that more than 60 diseases are linked to alcohol.

Indeed, Alcohol Concern recently revealed that drinking is now the second biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking and it is also the biggest cause of liver disease, the fifth most common cause of death in England.

Dr Gillan added: "What we need to look at is why we are drinking so much. Alcohol has become a part of our everyday lives and sadly alcohol misuse is affecting everyone, not just a small percentage of the population.

"It is sold too cheaply at supermarkets and we've created a pro-alcohol environment."

Alcohol Concern also found that the problem is on the rise, with an estimated 1.5 million people expected to be admitted to hospital each year from 2015 unless something is done to tackle the problem.
