PMI not affected by European court ruling

Countering the media hysteria that has been fuelled by parts of the insurance world, a specialist organisation points out that it will have little if no effect on private medical insurance.

Lindsey Joseph from the Association of Medical Insurance Intermediaries explains, “The vast majority of private medical insurers do not have different premiums for gender and for those that do, the difference in premium is not significant. However, there are a couple of insurers who have used gender pricing in the past and so have older policies on the books that would need to be adjusted from 21 December 2012. For those consumers, they should consider alternative options within the market, bearing in mind the need for continuous cover for previous medical conditions.”
