Off-piste travel insurance warning

Patchy snow reports across Europe this season may tempt skiers and snowboarders from the relative safety of the well worn pistes in search of snow.

However there are specific terms and conditions to being covered off-piste warns American Express Travel Insurance.

Without the right cover, skiers and snowboarders may be liable for any medical and repatriation costs if an accident should occur.

Each year more than 50,000 skiers and snow boarders are rescued from the French Alps – the most popular ski location for Brits – where the cost of airlifting directly off the slopes can be as much as £2,000.

Joanne Field, Marketing Manager, American Express Travel Insurance says: “Patchy conditions have been a problem in Europe this season and could tempt holidaymakers to flout rules. Last year there were twice as many accidents in the French Alps as the year before, so we would encourage everyone to ski or board.”

Some winter sports travel policies do not cover off-piste activities.

Others will only cover people when they are using a guide.

Check your cover before you leave.
