Smoking 'can lead to early menopause'

Women reminded of smoking dangers

Many women do not realise that smoking can induce an early onset of the menopause, one expert has said.

Amanda Sandford, research manager at Action on Smoking and Health, said due to the major health concerns that are attributed to smoking, the link between the habit and the process is "less well known".

Ms Sandford was commenting on a report, published in the journal Menopause, which provided evidence of the link.

"It is not anything new in that respect but what it certainly does is confirm earlier findings. It is certainly a valid piece of research that seems to confirm that association," explained Ms Sandford.

The International Menopause Society's (IMS) World Menopause Day was held on October 18th this year and revealed nearly one in four women suffered a poorer quality of life due to symptoms associated with the condition.

Women can experience depression, embarrassment and discomfort, but the IMS states hormone replacement therapy has been demonstrated to be a successful treatment in 90 per cent of cases.
