Public health issues 'still need greater emphasis'

doctor and patient

Doctors must focus more on prevention rather than cure in order to tackle the biggest health risks to future generations, according to a new publication.

Work published by the American Journal of Preventative Medicine urged healthcare professionals to put a greater emphasis on public health.

The publication stated doctors and researchers should not only focus upon developing and prescribing medicine, but also educate people enough to prevent them developing avoidable health risks.

"There is power in the collaboration of medicine and public health and we need to find better ways to harness this power to meet our current and future challenges," said Judith Monroe, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Office for State, Tribal, Local, and Territorial Support.

The UN recently held its summit for non-communicable diseases, where health experts and politicians outlined their plans to tackle worldwide health threats such as cancer, obesity and heart disease.
