Nuffield Health surgeons to investigate hip replacement failure rates

Top UK hip surgeons awarded research grant to study patients’ response to metal debris in hip replacements

Three of Nuffield Health’s leading hip surgeons have been awarded a grant from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to study the effects of metal debris on patients and the high level of failure rates for metal on metal hip replacements.

Evert Smith, Alun John and Duncan Whitwell who practice at the Nuffield Health Bristol (St. Mary’s) , Vale and Manor Oxford Hospitals respectively will form part of a international panel of hip surgery experts looking into this critical area.

The panel submitted a comprehensive proposal including implant retrieval and a tribological study and beat stiff international competition to win the contract.

Patricia Lee, Chief Executive, Nuffield Health Hospitals said:

“We would like to congratulate the surgeons involved in this prestigious piece of research. It’s particularly impressive to know that Nuffield Health surgeons were involved in a bid that saw off stiff competition from across the globe. We are immensely proud to have internationally renowned experts working in our hospitals and very pleased that our patients have the benefit of their care and expertise.”
