During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital is encouraging local Harrow residents to increase their breast awareness by offering them the chance to visit the hospital’s sister site, BMI City Medical in Central London, for a free GP led breast awareness consultation. During the free, 30 minute, consultation residents will be given the opportunity to talk with a GP, who will examine their breasts and offer advice on how often they should be performing breast checks and what key indicators of breast cancer they should be on the look out for. The breast awareness consultations are open to anyone over the age of 18 and residents in Harrow can find out more information about the breast awareness consultation, or book an appointment, by calling  0800 092 8631.

“It is surprising so many women put their health at risk by not being breast aware”, Mr Vashisht  said. “The awareness event organised by BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital will hopefully drive home the message that everyone should be aware of their own body and act quickly if they find anything outside of their normal boundaries.  It is vitally important that people take control of their breast health.  Across the course of their life, every woman in the UK will have a one in eight chance of developing the disease. With early diagnosis and intervention women can make the first positive steps to increase their chances of successful treatment. If you suspect or notice a lump or change in your breast it is imperative you visit your GP straight away,” Mr Vashisht concludes.

Mr Vashisht and the team at BMI The Clementine  Hospital advise that women should see their GP if they notice any of the following symptoms during their breast check:

  • Painless lumps in the breast

  • Changes in the size or shape of a breast

  • Dimpling to the skin of the breast

  • Thickened breast tissue

  • Nipple inversion

  • Lump or thickening behind the nipple

  • Rash affecting the nipple

  • Bloodstained discharge from the nipple

  • Swelling or a lump in the armpit.
