Exercise 'can help Arthritis treatment'

Exercise 'can help Arthritis treatment'

Treatment for arthritis could be aided by sufferers participating in the correct type of exercise, one expert has said.

Swimming is ideal for arthritic people as it works the affected joints and keeps them mobile, which could help prevent any further deterioration, said Jane Griffin - an adviser to the Joint Ageing Information Service Panel.

Patients will get the benefits of exercise while avoiding adding any excess weight that could be associated with other physical activities.

Ms Griffin, who advises the panel on nutrition, also urged people with arthritis to consume enough omega-3.

"Eating oily fish in the diet regularly will help and that is because of the omega-3 fatty acids that are present," she stated.

The nutritionist said that if patients do not want to eat the fish then supplements are available.

Sufferers and aid organisations recently celebrated World Arthritis Day, an event that was established in 1996 to promote understanding of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.
