It was a real impulse buy – a £3.99 bikini which was eight sizes too small. But the tiny pink two-piece would change Julie Palmer’s life forever, giving her the motivation to shed eight stone and have the wedding of her dreams.
At the time 20 stone and a size 26, Julie was out looking for clothes for her honeymoon when she spotted the costume on the bargain rail. “It was a moment of madness,” she says. “It was a size 10, pink and really girly – a world away from the frumpy blue tankini I’d worn on holiday the year before. But I was determined I was going to wear it.
“I tried it on that first day and I could hardly get it over my knees. But I’d set myself a goal – we were going to the Maldives and I wanted a beach body I could be proud of.”
Julie met lorry driver Neil Makins when her first marriage broke up. She was a size 16, but the takeaways took their toll and by the time Neil popped the question a year later she was bigger than a size 26.
She joined a weight loss club and six months before her wedding day, she hit her target of 12st 3lb and a size 14. But her dramatic weight loss had left her stomach hanging in a big empty flap.
Julie decided she wanted a trim tummy for her wedding and visited leading cosmetic surgeons, The Hospital Group.
She booked herself in for a tummy tuck and liposuction which reduced her size dramatically to a petite size 10.
But there was one last hurdle to conquer – the honeymoon bikini. “It took me three days to pluck up the courage to put it on,” says Julie.
“But when I did, Neil’s jaw dropped to the floor. By the end of our honeymoon I was parading around everywhere in it – I didn’t want to take it off.”
