Elderly 'choose alternative treatments'

Elderly people are opting for alternative treatments when it comes to flu.

This is according to recent research published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing.

The study found that remedies such as bathing in a herbal mixture were popular among older generations.

A total of nine countries were assessed by the scientists to see why so many were not meeting the 75 per cent annual influenza vaccination rate recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Alternative health solutions were found to be one of the key reasons, however good general health and hygiene practices also played a role.

Professor Samantha Mei-che Pang commented on the study: "[The study] also revealed a finding that we do not believe has been observed in previous studies: that those who distrust the vaccine's effectiveness are more likely to rely on healthy lifestyles, good hand hygiene and indigenous health practices to protect them from flu."
