A recent survey has suggested that some diabetics could benefit from eating a small amount of dark chocolate on a daily basis.
Researchers from Hull University looked at the effects of feeding people with Type 2 diabetes around 45g of chocolate a day.
Those who ate the chocolate with a higher cocoa solids content saw their cholesterol levels improve.
Steve Atkin, professor of diabetes and endocrinology at the university and leader of the study, commented: "People with Type 2 diabetes are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease and since one of the main contributory factors to heart disease is a low level of HDL or 'good' cholesterol, the findings that dark chocolate can improve this, means the results of this study are hugely significant."
It is thought that the polyphenols contained in the chocolate had a positive effect on 'good' cholesterol levels in the patients.
