Tooth whitening as a form of cosmetic dentistry is not a new procedure but the technology has advanced, according to a health professional.
Dr Ira Kirshen, president of the Ontario Dental Association, told the Toronto Sun that teeth which have become heavily discoloured can now be whitened, which could not have been done effectively a long time ago.
However, he warned people to be wary about using cheap products, since patients will either end up damaging their mouth or having to repeat the process several times to achieve a good result.
Dr Kirshen noted that many people prefer to have their teeth whitened at a cosmetic dentist's surgery because it is safer and healthcare professionals have been doing it for decades.
"Even 20 years ago we used 30 per cent hydrogen peroxide on gauze strips, which we put over the teeth and applied a light to heat them up and activate the peroxide to lighten teeth," he told the newspaper.
