Effectiveness of laser hair removal systems

Iranian researchers have carried out a study to investigate the safety and effectiveness of different laser therapies for the removal of unwanted body hair.

The researchers analysed two therapies - long-pulsed 755-nanometre alexandrite lasers and long-pulsed 1,064 nanometre Nd:YAG lasers - for the reduction of leg hair growth on four areas of the legs.

They also looked at the effectiveness of using a combination of the two therapies.

Fifteen participants completed the study, undergoing four treatment sessions at eight-week intervals.

They found that laser therapies tend to be safer and more effective when used in isolation rather than when used in combination.

Publishing their findings in the Archives of Dermatology, the researchers concluded: "The use of alexandrite or Nd:YAG laser systems alone for at least four treatment sessions and with eight-week intervals have long-term persistent efficacy in hair reduction with acceptable and transient adverse effects."

Laser hair removal can be used to reduce hair on the face, bikini line, underarms, legs and stomach.

Several treatments are needed to achieve the best results as the treatment is only really effective on hairs that are just starting to grow.
