A new genetic test can identify men who are most at risk of hair loss and who could benefit from a hair transplant
The Manchester-based Farjo Medical Centre is now offering the simple test, which uses a DNA sample collected from a cheek swab to screen for a genetic predisposition to pattern baldness.
This is a common type of hair loss that affects most men at some stage, usually taking between 15 and 25 years to go bald.
People who are found to be at high risk of pattern baldness can take steps to reduce their hair loss or can opt to have hair transplant treatment as their hair begins to thin.
Dr Bessam Farjo, who co-founded the Farjo Medical Centre, revealed: "The genetic test enables risk of pattern baldness to be assessed before hair loss occurs.
"Earlier intervention and treatment give patients the best chance of success, as the only FDA approved medications to combat hair loss - minoxidil and finasteride - are most effective at stabilising hair loss rather than stimulating re-growth."
In a hair transplant, which is the only permanent method for restoring hair, strong hair follicles are removed from the back and sides of the head and transplanted into the thinning areas.
