A new vaccine that could save thousands of women from the ravages of cervical cancer is now available privately in the UK.

According to vaccine maker Sanofi Pasteur there are now over 100,000 doses of the drug available in the country.

The vaccine in already in use widely in the US, Australia, Mexico, Canada and New Zealand but as yet is not available on the NHS.

The treatment, which tackles possible cancer causing human papillomavirus (HPV), costs £80.50 a dose, of which three are required for immunisation.

Designed to be given to girls and women aged between nine and 26, it protects against cervical cancer caused by HPV strains 6, 11, 16 and 18, and also against genital warts.

Cervical cancer kills 1,120 women every year in Britain.
