Obesity treatment likely to be common cosmetic surgery

Obesity treatment is likely to represent a large amount of cosmetic surgery procedures this year.

Nigel Mercer, past president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said that massive weight loss patients are going on to have further procedures after their initial treatment.

"We do have a big problem with obesity in the United Kingdom and normal patients are having weight loss surgery and then they need very extensive operations to have bodylifts, breastlifts, facelifting and armlifts to try and get them back into a situation where they can wear normal clothes without having massive skin folds," he said.

The comments come after the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors confirmed that demand for non-surgical cosmetic procedures increased dramatically in 2010 as men and women embraced alternatives to going under the knife.

Mr Mercer added that blepharoplasty (eye bag removal surgery) is also becoming increasingly popular, particularly among men.
