Obesity surgery 'recommended solution'

It has been suggested that obesity surgery may be the best way of treating the growing epidemic.

Tam Fry, board member and spokesperson of the National Obesity Forum, has said that people are unlikely to respond to methods of prevention and treatment like healthy eating and exercise.

He added: "They probably won't respond quickly to pharmaceutical treatment, but under the surgeon's knife they will be cured in a simple cost-effective operation."

Earlier this month, the Office of Health Economics published a report suggesting that the additional paid work generated through offering bariatric surgery would allow the UK to offset the cost of providing obesity surgery to patients.

However, a proportion of the public appear to be in favour of people funding their own obesity surgery as a report from Friends Provident found that 44 per cent of experts and consumers supported the idea of a 'fat tax' and agreed that people should be penalised for their unhealthy lifestyle choices.
