Nutrition 'important for elderly'

It has been suggested that a number of elderly people in the UK are at risk of malnutrition.

Indeed, research from the National Association of Care Catering (NACC) revealed that one in ten older people in the UK are at risk of the problem.

This could rise as the country's population begins to age.

Commenting on the report, Lynne Berry, chief executive of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, said that the important of "good nutrition cannot be underestimated".

She added: "It is important for all those involved in the sector to continue finding ways of making sure older people have access to good food.

"This is a timely contribution to the debate at a time when decision makers have to weigh choices about the future of our care services before the conclusion of the spending round."

A Nutrition Standard was launched by the NACC, which is intended to serve as a guideline for people providing meals for the elderly.
