Tailored medicines 'a possibility'

Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC)

The advancement of diagnostic imaging and genomic sequencing has pioneered medicine advancements that could potentially help save more lives in the future.

Edward Abrahams, the president of the Personalized Medicine Coalition (PMC), said that drugs could be modified to suit an individual's own biochemical constitution, which will allow them to specifically target the symptoms and causes of an individual's illness.

Scientific improvements are occurring at a fast rate and new tools and methods which focus on the development of these medicines are being developed constantly, said Mr Abrahams.

He believes the developments could improve the effectiveness of drug remedies, which could subsequently save lives and, eventually, reduce the costs associated with medicine.

The PMC wants to ensure these objectives are realised and the new techniques become part of everyday medical procedure.

Founded in 2004, the group aims to influence policymakers to change the mindset of the healthcare community.
