'Perfect storm' causes alcohol abuse

Alcohol abuse treatments – what are the options?

Alcohol abuse is caused by several factors occurring simultaneously in a patient's life, according to one expert.

Up to three main issues in a person's life can combine to create "the perfect storm" that tips them over the edge from being a heavy drinker to suffering from alcohol abuse, said Adrianna Irvine, a psychotherapist who specialises in addiction, anxiety and depression.

She believes that a person can be predisposed to the condition because of their genetic constitution and although it is a major contributing factor that causes alcoholism, it does not necessarily guarantee it.

Alcohol abuse in some patients can also be triggered by their upbringing and any traumas they may have faced, said Ms Irvine.

"Each and every one of those things doesn't really contribute much [on their own], it's down to each individual," she added.

Alcohol Concern is currently hosting its Alcohol Awareness Week to promote understanding about the issues involved with the condition.
