Dentists 'can help spot mouth cancer'

dental patient

Mouth cancer treatment could be prevented if people continue to visit their dentist for regular checkups.

Dentists are primary care providers who specialise in the health of a patient's mouth and are best qualified to notice when something potentially dangerous occurs in the area, stated University College London Eastman Dental Institute Professor Stephen Porter.

"Before cancer occurs there are often features such as painless white or white and red areas of the lining of the mouth. These are generally solitary and easy to detect clinically," said Professor Porter.

He explained dentists can then arrange for the patient to be sent to a specialist who can ascertain what treatment needs to provided.

Without early detection 30,000 people in the UK could die from the disease over the next ten years, according to the British Dental Health Foundation. The group recently commissioned research which revealed 81 per cent of people are unaware of the symptoms of the disease.
