Cosmetic surgeons utilise Hollywood technology

Cosmetic surgeons are using the latest technology from the Hollywood film industry to help patients undergoing face transplants.

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre (UPMC) have begun using the 3D modelling systems which are often used to mimic human facial movements on animated characters.

Dr Vijay Gorantla, administrative medical director of the Reconstructive Transplantation Program at UPMC, said that the procedure is allowing surgeons to better assess a person's underlying facial structure.

"This 3D modelling helps us customise the procedure to the patient's individual anatomy so that the donor tissue will fit like a puzzle piece onto the patient's face," he added.

Individuals who have suffered serious facial disfigurement often undergo the transplant in an attempt to restore their ability to chew and speak.
