New research from Bupa suggests that staff
absenteeism is putting additional stress on employees who are left to hold the
fort.
The research says that other effects on
colleagues include other employees having to pick up the extra workload and
having to take on extra overtime.
Despite the challenges of sickness absence for
both unwell employees and their colleagues, excluding private health insurance,
45% of companies lack a workplace health programme for all employees. For
example, absence case management or psychological support and coaching for
employees when needed.
Alex Perry of Bupa says; "It is important
that employers provide sufficient support to help people who are unwell get
better and to return to work when they are able. While many companies know that
there are potential benefits to investing in workplace health, one of the
biggest barriers for employers is understanding how and where to invest in
order to receive the most benefit."
