In June, trade association ABI proposed a new name and standard definitions for total permanent disability. At the time, the suggested name of “irreversible life-changing disability” was attacked as complex and long-winded.
Research from Medicals Direct and Le Beau Visage shows that many in the insurance industry neither support the proposed name nor the attached definitions. The general view is that the ABI’s approach is far too complicated for consumers to understand.
Outside the research, other insurers argue that a trade body has no business being involved in deciding policy wording, and such insurer agreements stifle competition and innovation.
