Obesity 'at epidemic proportions'

Mind, Exercise, Nutrition … Do It! (MEND)

Obesity in the UK is "now reaching epidemic proportions", it has been suggested.

Paul Sacher, chief research and development officer at Mind, Exercise, Nutrition … Do it! (MEND), said that there are "many complex factors" behind the issue.

He added: "As well as the impact of individual decisions parents and children themselves make, we have to look at human biology, culture, the food environment, for example, the increasing round-the-clock availability of low-cost, high fat, high sugar foods, and the physical environment, for example, the way we are leading increasingly sedentary lives, with more 'screen time' and car usage."

The comments follow a recent survey conducted by Datamonitor, which revealed that two-thirds of Britons are overweight or obese.

This translates to 16.5 million people being classified as obese by 2014.

According to the researchers, "information overload" from the country's media could be responsible for the rising rates of obesity as the public become desensitised to the issue.
