Mental health diagnosis 'should be quicker'

Centre for Mental Health

Diagnosis for mental health problems needs to be quicker, it has been suggested.

Andy Bell, spokesman for the Centre for Mental Health, said: "The big problem is that we don't recognise mental health problems in ourselves or others quickly enough and only a minority of people who have depression or anxiety get treatment for it."

The comments come after a number of research projects have revealed further insight into depression and mental health.

One such study, conducted by King's College London in partnership with Axa, identified the neural pathways which control 'peace of mind' in the human brain.

According to the scientists, this could lead to improved treatments for anxiety disorders and depression.

A second study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, found that individuals who engage in a regular leisure-time activity involving exercise are less likely to have symptoms of depression.

Mr Bell added that more research into psychological therapies "would be very valuable".
