Managing stress is vital for business success

Latest statistics from the Health and Safety Executive reports that over 11 million working days were lost to stress in Britain last year with an estimated 415,000 individuals believing they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.

In today’s tough economic climate, as companies are cutting back on staffing levels, it is recognised that employees are under increasing pressure to perform and in many cases to take on more work. The consequences of failing to handle stress levels can be very serious for employers as they may face a greater risk of stress-related litigation. It is important for employers to have the right procedures in place to support their workforce and ensure they are meeting their duty of care.

Research shows that more than half of UK workers would welcome a stress counselling service provided by their employer. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy study consulted 1,440 employees, who said they would benefit from more support to deal with work-related stress and the effects of the recession. The majority of employers surveyed believe that the recession has made it more likely that employees will require counselling.

Westfield Health offers affordable corporate healthcare plans that can help employers to support their employees with access to a 24-hour counselling and advice line plus face-to-face counselling sessions.
