People who are struggling to maintain the weight lost through obesity treatments may want to look into different types of diet.
Researchers from the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen have revealed that high protein diets with a small amount of low glycaemic index (GI) carbohydrates have the best long-term results.
The scientists put almost 1,000 volunteers with a body mass index of 34 on an 800 kcal a day diet for eight weeks.
Participants lost an average of 11 kg.
They were then put onto one of a number of different diets in order to ascertain how they regained the weight.
Those on the high protein low GI diet regained the least amount.
Publishing their work in the New England Journal of Medicine, the researchers suggested that one of the reasons why this diet proved most successful was that it allowed people to eat until they felt full without counting calories.
