Heating costs 'leave elderly vulnerable'

Heating costs 'leave elderly vulnerable'

Older people may want to research private care homes after it has been suggested that heating costs could be detrimental to their health.

Simon Bottery, director of policy at Independent Age, said recently that elderly people's health is more vulnerable during winter.

This is a particular problem this year, he explained, due to the fact that fuel prices are so high.

"They must keep their room temperatures higher than younger people to stay healthy, and are likely to spend a lot more time indoors," he remarked.

"But given the current cost of fuel prices this can be a real strain, and leads some to cutting back on other basics or risking the cold."

Earlier this month Age UK Enterprises revealed that inflation is having a disproportionate effect on the over-55s due to spending patters.

Those aged between 65 and 69 were particularly strongly affected as they are thought to be £700 worse off over the course of the year.
