Could orange juice lower blood pressure?

Orange juice could be a simple way to help lower blood pressure.

A recent research project conducted in France found that drinking two glasses of orange juice a day lowered the blood pressure of volunteers.

Twenty-four overweight but otherwise healthy middle-aged men were used in the research, which was carried out by scientists at the University of Auvergne.

After drinking the orange juice everyday for four weeks the group was given sweetened water and a capsule containing natural compound hesperidin for a further four weeks before being given the water with a placebo capsule.

"The main result was that four weeks of consuming orange juice, or purified hesperidin, significantly decreased diastolic blood pressure in healthy men," the researchers concluded.

"A three to four point reduction in diastolic blood pressure would reduce the incidence of coronary artery disease by 20 per cent."
