Cancer care 'improving unevenly'

CancerPartnersUK

Quality of cancer care varies by region in the UK, it has been suggested.

Professor Karol Sikora, medical director of CancerPartnersUK, said that overall, cancer care has "improved remarkably over the last ten years".

However, "there is still regional variation where access and capacity and facilities to treat people with either radiotherapy or chemotherapy is varied", she added.

Furthermore, the professor noted that care for the disease varied according to the type of cancer.

For example: "Breast cancer is probably treated the best because systems are in place, such as screening programs, to make sure that breast cancer patients are treated effectively."

While the level of care for men's cancers such as prostate and colon cancer "is probably not as good as the quality of care that women get" because men tend not to talk about or worry about their problems as much, she explained.

The comments follow reports from the National Audit Office that NHS cancer centres vary significantly and a "lack of high quality information on costs of cancer services and their outcomes inhibits substantial further improvements".
