Advice for winter sports enthusiasts

Age UK

Gordon Morris of Age UK Enterprises advises, "Winter has officially started and the ski season is upon us. Winter sports, including skiing and snowboarding, are no longer the preserve of the young and we are delighted to cater for customers who may struggle to get winter sports cover from other providers who decline to insure based on age. We encourage people in later life to keep fit and healthy; however we urge that, for peace of mind, they ensure they make sure they are fully insured when doing so."

Age UK Travel Insurance, provided by Ageas Insurance, offers the following guidance to customers wishing to take part in winter sports this season:

  • Photocopy your passport and other important documents in case the original gets lost or stolen and remember to take details of your travel insurance policy with you

  • Check your cover: Some insurers will not cover accidents which happen when skidoing or skiing off piste

  • Make sure you keep hydrated whilst on the slopes. Altitude can affect people in different ways and to avoid sickness you need to be well watered

  • Always avoid skiing alone.  If you do, always make sure people know where you are and you carry a mobile phone

  • Always carry a piste map
