Cornwall promoted as cosmetic surgery destination

Cornwall promoted as cosmetic surgery destination in a bid to attract patients who might otherwise have considered travelling overseas for treatment.

The Duchy Hospital in Truro, which is operated by Ramsay Health Care UK, is currently promoting its services in the national press, BBC News reports.

At present, some 150 cosmetic surgery procedures are carried out each year at the private hospital, around 20 of which are performed on people who travel to Cornwall from another county.

James McDiarmid, a consultant plastic surgeon at the hospital, told the BBC that it is "better" for patients to undertake cosmetic surgery close to their home rather than overseas.

"It's very difficult if you've gone abroad and come back with a wound infection," he explained.

"You have to jump back on a plane again to see the original specialist.

"As long as you're on the same island with the same legal system that can hold that clinic or doctor accountable, then you're in a far better position."

The Duchy Hospital has now entered an agreement with accommodation providers in the area, enabling patients to recuperate in any of a number of suitable hotels, guesthouses and self-catering units.

General manager Chris Sealey revealed: "Our out-of-county patients will be able to plan their recuperation in advance, while patients elsewhere in the UK will be able to choose accommodation providers who welcome convalescing patients and are prepared for their needs."
