Spire hospital offering new heart treatment in Yorkshire

Heart patients visiting Spire Leeds Hospital can now benefit from a new state-of-the-art cardiac facility.

The service, which is offered at only three hospitals in the north of England, exists thanks to a £1 million investment and is available to private and insured patients.

The consultant is able to analyse the heart's electrical system thanks to a test called electrophysiology, helping them to diagnose the cause of any irregular heartbeat.

If necessary, this can then be treated with radiofrequency ablation, in which energy is applied to the area of the heart responsible for the arrhythmia, re-setting the heart rhythm.

Stephen Monfredi, from Sheffield, has suffered from atrial fibrillation for a number of years and was one of the first people to be treated at the unit.

He enthused: "I was really pleased with my treatment at Spire Leeds. I was given a thorough assessment beforehand which was reassuring and, although I was nervous to start with, I was comfortable throughout the procedure.

"I am optimistic that the treatment will make a big difference to my life."

Spire Healthcare was formed last year following the sale of Bupa Hospitals to private equity company Cinven.
