AXA PPP Healthcare logo

Research commissioned by AXA Sun Life Direct shows that the average cost of a standard UK funeral is now £2,549, up 6.6% on 2007. 77% of funerals are cremations, average cost £2,287. Burials average cost is £2,811.

In addition to the funeral director fees and crematorium charge, there are additional costs; death notice in press, funeral flowers & order sheets for service, extra limousine, venue hire for wake & catering, funeral notice in press, memorial/book of remembrance, probate (administration of the estate). So the average total cost of dying in the UK is £6,698.

Those planning a funeral should decide the style they want and make a checklist of component parts. If they get quotes from two or three local funeral directors, it is often possible to save £200-£300 for a like for like service. They should also ensure that funds are immediately available because funeral directors require prompt payment.
