Women are postponing cosmetic surgery and having cheaper non-surgical treatments in a bid to defy the credit crunch, a leading cosmetic surgeon has revealed.

According to Dr Brian Newman, founder of Dr Newman's Clinic, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of people spending money on minor cosmetic procedures.

He revealed: "We've seen a 60 per cent increase since the summer in the number of people having treatment for thread veins or rosacea.

"It's cheaper and easier than a facelift under the knife but has a dramatic effect on people's appearance and confidence," Dr Newman added.

He also described non-surgical procedures as "recession-proof" because women are unlikely to stop improving their appearance during the credit crunch.

Dr Newman's Clinic is located in London's Harley Street Greater Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and Birmingham.

It is known for pioneering a thermocoagulation procedure which uses microwave technology to eliminate thread veins and rosacea.
