Employers can improve the level of workplace health in their company by allowing staff to work flexibly, experts have said.
According to the Health and Safety Executive's 2006/07 survey of self-reported work-related illness, around 420,000 people claim to have experienced work-related stress at a level that made them ill.
Ann McCracken, vice chair of the International Stress Management Association, suggests that flexible working can be used "very positively to manage your day better", particularly if someone can alter their hours to suit their own peak time.
Managing workplace health is important as stress can lead to a range of health problems, Ms McCracken continued.
"The physical impacts [of stress] can be anything from the big ones: strokes, heart disease, high blood pressure etcetera through to digestive problems - particularly irritable bowel," the expert revealed.
Stress can also cause skin problems such as eczema, rashes, psoriasis, headaches, migraines and hormone imbalances, she added.
