Hair restoration: Balding men 'have a really hard time'

Hair loss – what are the treatments?
Men who are suffering from hair loss have a "really hard time", according to the charity Alopecia UK.

Alopecia is a natural process of hair loss or thinning that affects around two thirds of men at some point.

However, Ruth Bowdage, a spokeswoman for Alopecia UK, revealed that many men feel that their condition is dismissed by people demonstrating a lack of understanding.

"Men are told that it is fashionable to shave their head so they should just do that," Ms Bowdage said.

However, she pointed out that hair is part of a person's image and that losing it "can drastically affect the self-confidence".

"Some men are very upset because they feel people dismiss what is happening to them as unimportant," she added.

Many men now choose to benefit from one of the new technologies designed to transplant and restore hair.

A variety of surgical and non-surgical options are now available to treat alopecia and hair thinning, although hair transplant is the only permanent method of restoring hair.
