Health insurer Standard Life Healthcare has launched an option that could cut individual private medical insurance premiums by 15%.
The new Guided Option feature, which is available with most products, means that customers can receive a discount if they allow their GP to refer them to a private hospital rather than a named consultant.
The option will soon be available across the national network of 47 hospitals operated by BUPA and Capio, with other hospitals to follow.
Customers wishing to retain full choice of hospital will be able to do so by not choosing the Guided Option on their plan.
