Research by health insurer HSA finds that the UK workforce has little or no desire to work beyond the current age for retirement.
HSA conducted the “Who’s Looking After our Health” research among over 1,000 workers in the UK during July. The survey found that only 15% of those surveyed would definitely consider working beyond the current retirement age, in comparison to 33% who definitely would not consider this option. A further 21% responded stating they would not want to work longer, but that may have to.
“The new regulations around age discrimination, which come into force on 1 October 2006, are designed to help ensure that people of all ages are given the same opportunities. It also means that individuals can choose to work beyond the current age of retirement. Our research shows that there is little appetite for this,” comments Suzanne Clarkson, of HSA. “
The research also found the following results:
Men are slightly more inclined to work beyond the current retirement age than women with 17% of men saying they would definitely work longer compared to 12% of women
Those aged over 55 are the most receptive to working later in life, with 29% of this age group responding that they would definitely consider working beyond the current retirement age
