New video about addiction treatment from Castle Craig

In this new video Maryam Ghaffari, an Iranian-born therapist at Castle Craig Hospital in Scotland, describes the complications of living with addiction -- as well as the transformation that can follow successful treatment.

The title of the video is 'We Transform Lives'

As a therapist who treats people with alcoholism and drug addiction every day, Maryam Ghaffari knows how complicated life is when addiction takes hold:

“They wake up and think about their next fix...How am I going to get it? Where am I going to get the money? Where am I going to use it? How am I going to hide what I'm doing? And once I use it I've got to recover and start the whole thing again.

“Our patients come in here absolutely exhausted from this process” Maryam says, “and their families are exhausted...This individual's life is controlled by a bottle or a bag. There is no life...They're not fulfilling their potential...It becomes all about the substance.”

Family Therapy

Family members of those in addiction treatment are an important part of the recovery process at Castle Craig rehab clinic.  A person with an addiction will often bring a whole series of problems into a family. Families go through years of anguish as they try and deal with the consequences of addiction.

Maryam explains how the energy and vitality of the addict's family can be consumed. They ask questions like “Where is he? What's he doing? Is he okay? Is he in trouble? Do I need to go to a hospital to fetch him? Do I need to go to the police?...The family become all about their worry and fear for that individual, so they lose their own vitality. They're not living empowered, effective, joyful, fulfilled lives.”

Worth Getting Up For

Maryam talks about the gradual emergence of the “authentic person” during the treatment process, and a change from someone “whose life is totally and utterly controlled by their drug of choice” to a “transformation on a spiritual, physical, emotional, psychological level...from a wilting to a thriving life.”

She says it is “an absolute privilege to witness...something worth waking up for in the morning. I love what I do.”
