New-generation gastric band launched

Scientists have launched a new type of gastric band for use in obesity surgery.

The Midband is a new weight loss solution that could help patients who struggle with obesity to lose weight and could also help to cure obesity-related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea.

The device is easy to implant and hugs the stomach, creating a small pouch so that food intake is reduced.

Able to be inserted during day surgery, the device comes in a one-size-fits-all format, so that it is suitable for people with all degrees of obesity.

According to the Midband's manufacturers, it can help patients to lose up to 80 per cent of their excess weight within two years.

Dr Ian Rankin, managing director of Dot Medical, described the device as "a qualitatively different and new approach for safe weight loss support".

"It can help to turn dreams of weight loss into reality; it can help you to take control of your life rather than life controlling you," he added.
