There has been a 'dramatic' rise in the number of men seeking cosmetic surgery to reduce the size of their breasts, new figures show.
According to the cosmetic surgery group SurgiCare, the number of male breast reduction procedures was three times higher in January 2009 than January 2008.
The figures suggest that men are becoming increasingly concerned about their appearance and they may also reflect the rising levels of obesity in the UK.
Recent figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) confirm the trend, revealing that 323 men underwent breast reduction surgery in 2008.
This represents a 44 per cent increase from 2007.
When a man undergoes breast reduction surgery, the surgeon removes excess fat and skin from the breasts to reduce their size and volume.
A male breast reduction in a UK private hospital is likely to cost in the region of £3,000 to £4,000.
