Women have been warned not to follow the results of some recent research to the letter.
A study conducted by Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, found that women who did not drink any alcohol tended to put on more weight than those who did.
Looking at middle-aged women, the research found that those who drank a "light to moderate amount of alcohol" gained the least amount of weight.
However, doctors have warned women that it would be a mistake to think that moderate alcohol consumption would help in weight loss.
The researchers believe that it is more likely that women who drank moderately would balance out the calories in their drinks by denying themselves snacks.
Dr Jacquie Lavin, head of nutrition and research at Slimming World, commented: "While it's certainly possible to slim down and still enjoy the odd glass of wine, it would be wrong for people to think that it is going to provide them with a solution to their weight problems."
Women are advised to drink no more than three units a day, while men should not exceed four in a day.
