People in the UK need
to understand that using sunbeds is a major health risk.
This is the opinion of Kimberley Carter of the British Association of
Dermatologists, who believes that many individuals do not recognise the dangers
that exposure to the UV rays that the machines create can bring.
She said that the awareness problems were compounded by they fact that sunbeds
are perceived as healthy as they are often found in gyms and sports centres.
"Not only is there the skin cancer risk to consider, but sunbeds also contribute to premature ageing of the
skin, leading to the development of fine lines and wrinkles," stated Ms
Davies.
The UV levels of some machines can be up to 15 times as high as the midday sun
and are very dangerous, she added.
Recently many leading model agencies signed up to Cancer Research UK's no
sunbed policy to try to increase awareness of the risks involved with tanning.
