Peace of mind is more
important to cancer patients than seeking additional information about treatment options.
The results of a new report which recorded the reasons sufferers called Cancer
Research UK's helpline showed that only 11 per cent used the information to
help them choose a treatment option for their disease.
Martin Ledwick, the charity's head information nurse, said because it was
imperative that patients make informed decisions, it is easy to assume that
people only want help regarding this matter.
"But this survey showed that many people who contact us have a fundamental
need to understand their situation which is not related to making a
choice," he added.
According to the report, 63 per cent wanted specific question answered, while
46 just sought a greater understanding of their overall situation.
The charity states that around 850 people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer
in the UK every day.
