Spouses more likely to develop dementia?

Alzheimer's Research UK

Couples in which one person is suffering from dementia might want to consider looking into the care options available to them.

Recent research has found that spouses who care for a loved one with dementia are more likely to develop the condition themselves.

The study, which was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, explained that the risk of cognitive problems among older people can be heightened by the stress of caring for a loved one and by sharing their lifestyle.

However, Dr Simon Ridley, head of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, explained that a lot more research is needed before it is known whether the strain of caring for a dementia sufferer can lead the carer to develop the condition.

He added: "Nevertheless, the paper underlines the fact that dementia does not just affect the 820,000 people in the UK who are diagnosed with the condition – it has a huge impact on their loved ones as well."
