Pregnancy diet should include fresh foods, women told

Pregnancy diet should include fresh foods

Women might want to seek out private maternity services to improve their knowledge of what to eat when expecting.

According to one specialist pregnancy fitness consultant, Vicky Warr, who works for Mothercare, mothers-to-be require supportive nutrition when pregnant.

"Coloured seasonal vegetables, salads, soups, stir fry's lean protein - fish, chicken and turkey, and a good old steak for iron," are all essentials.

She urged women to remember that "the baby inside's only source of nutrients is the mum's, so whatever mum eats passes down the placenta".

The expert added that organic produce should be consumed where possible.

Earlier this month, the University of Bristol revealed that women who gain more than the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy are more likely to become obese in later life.

The study noted that they were also more likely to experience obesity-related health issues, like high blood pressure further down the line.
