ASPS reports increase in “mummy makeovers”

tummy tuck

Pregnancy takes its toll on your body.  During the 9 month gestation period, abdomens stretch to accommodate the growing baby.  90% of women have stretch marks as the skin is pulled tight over the bump.  However, it’s not just the tummy that’s affected.  Breasts swell and most women will have to change their bra size as well as choosing a different style.

When the baby is born and breast-feeding complete, many women reappraise their post-baby bodies.

According to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the number of women getting “mommy makeover” procedures is on the rise.  2010 statistics were:

  • Nearly 112,000 female tummy tucks – an increase of 85% compared to 2000
  • 90,000 breast lifts – an increase of 70% compared to 2000
  • 296,000 breast augmentations – an increase of 39% compared to 2000

ASPS President Phillip Haeck MD explained: “In the last decade we’ve seen women’s attitudes about cosmetic surgery change. Today women are not afraid to admit that they love their children, but they wish their bodies looked the way they did before their first pregnancies. And they’re not afraid to acknowledge that they may need a little help beyond a healthy diet and exercise…”

“…we are seeing young mothers in their 30s coming in for procedures such as tummy tucks and breast lifts. They don’t want to wait years to reestablish how they used to look. They want their pre- baby bodies back now.”said Dr. Haeck.

The Hospital Group, leading provider of cosmetic surgery in the UK, is seeing a similar trend.

David Ross, CEO, commented “Even in the last year we have seen an increase in enquiries for “Mummy Makeover” procedures.  The tummy tuck in particular is very popular this year – we have received 31% more enquiries for abdominoplasty compared to the start of 2010.

We believe that one of the key reasons is consumer awareness.  People are much more informed about cosmetic surgery thanks to programmes such as Embarrassing Bodies, 10 Years Younger and features in numerous magazines.  Our patients are very aware of what procedures are available and also are clear about what results they can expect to achieve, as they have generally seen before and after pictures that they can relate to.

Our Surgeons specialise in aesthetic cosmetic surgery, so understand the importance of a really good result.  They see many women who are looking to reshape their body after pregnancy and can show photos of their previous patients in a consultation.

We also include a free lifetime of aftercare with all cosmetic surgery procedures for our patients’ peace of mind. “

The Hospital Group offers cosmetic surgery consultations free of charge in clinics around the UK.
