WCRF: Healthy lifestyle could prevent cancer cases

Around 20,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented every year if women followed a healthier lifestyle.

This is according to figures recently released by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

The charity stated that there were

approximately 47,600 new cases of the disease in the UK in 2008.

Of these, 20,000 could have been avoided by maintaining a healthy weight, lowering alcohol consumption and being more physically active.

Alcohol should be avoided or limited to one a day; women should remain as "lean as possible without becoming underweight" and they should be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day.

Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at the WCRF, commented: "What these figures show is that people can do a lot to reduce their chances of developing cancer.

"Overall, we estimate about a third of the most common cancers could be prevented through a healthy diet, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight.
